The Canisius College volleyball team opens up MAAC play this coming weekend, as the squad faces Marist and Siena on Saturday and Sunday.Both matches are slated for 1 p.m. start times. This will be the first foray into conference action for the Blue and Gold head coach Lenika Vazquez, who is working her way through her first campaign. Canisius finished the non-conference season with a 2-7 mark, and had a promising first weekend going 2-1 and completing the season-opening tournament with a better-than-.500 record for the first time since 2008.

The Canisius team’s lone member of the All-MAAC preseason team, Katlyn Tyler, has led the Griffs attack so far this season. The senior is posting her second-best season kills-per-set mark, averaging 3.07 kills per frame, while also boasting her highest digs-per-set mark of her career with a 2.97 average. Tyler is ranked fourth in the MAAC in kills per set, 10th in digs per set and fourth in the conference in total points, accounting for 3.35 points-per-frame.

As a team, the Blue and Gold are ranked in the top half of the conference in hitting percentage, ranking fourth with a .142 mark. A key ingredient to this year’s team has been that of its youngest players. The freshman class have provided key contributions, with Cassidy Ceriani, Leah Simmons, Gabrielle Darnaby, and Carly Shifflet all receiving ample playing time and producing on the court. Ceriani has 226 assists so far this season, averaging 7.53 assists per set to the lead the team. She is currently fourth in the conference in assists per set.

Simmons leads the team in blocks with 19 total and a 0.73 blocks-per-set average. Shifflet is giving Kristen Plukas some competition at the libero position, as the duo have both seen time on the floor for Canisius. Shifflet is third on the team in digs per set with a 2.07 mark, while Ceriani is second with an average of 2.27 per frame.

Canisius heads into the 23rd meeting with Marist, and holds a 19-13 edge against its foe from Poughkeepsie. The Red Foxes enter conference play after scuffling through a difficult non-conference slate. Marist is 0-10 but has played strong opponents such as San Diego State, Michigan State, Army and Florida Golf Coast. Kelsey Ediger leads the team in kills per set, sparking the offense with a 2.39 mark. She also boasts a 1.67 digs-per-set average. Lexi Millington paces the team in digs with her squad-best 4.30 digs-per-frame average. The Red Foxes have a pair of setters that help distribute the ball, with Amanda Schliegel pacing the team with 7.46 assists-per-set, and Van Der Biezen is next with a 6.37 mark. Nikki DeSpar is ranked third in the conference in service aces with 0.43 per set.

The Blue and Gold ends its weekend with the 44th meeting between the Griffs and the Siena Saints. Canisius trails in the series 15-28. The Saints enter conference play with a 1-9 record, and are currently on a nine-game losing streak after defeating St. Francis Brooklyn in the first match of the season. Briana Flagg and Sonja Vasovic are the team’s primary offensive produces, leading the team with kills-per-set marks of 2.56 and 2.53, respectively. Kaleuhua Kategiri paces the team with digs per set with an average of 4.94, while Haley Howell the team’s primary distributor on the floor, leading in assist per frame with a 8.17 mark. As a team the Saints are ranked second in the MAAC in digs per set with a 13.72 average.
