The Canisius College men’s soccer team will close out the non-conference portion of its 2016 schedule this weekend with a pair of games against St. Bonaventure and Central Connecticut State. The Golden Griffins will start the weekend Friday, Sept. 16, when the team hosts long-time rival St. Bonaventure at the Demske Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and that game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

Canisius went 1-1-0 last weekend in a pair of games at the Duquesne Invitational in Pittsburgh. The Griffs scored a 2-1 win over Bucknell Friday. In that game, freshman Troy Brady scored his first collegiate goal, and senior Thomas Teupen posted his first career game-winning goal. The Blue and Gold fell to host Duquesne 1-0 in overtime on Sunday. The Dukes scored the game-winning goal in the contest’s 100th minute. That was the first overtime game of the season for Canisius.

The Griffs and Bonnies are meeting for the 48th time, making St. Bonaventure the second-most frequented opponent on the Griffs’ schedule (Canisius has played Niagara 56 times). St. Bonaventure holds a 25-15-7 all-time advantage against the Griffs but Canisius is a perfect 5-0-0 against the Bonnies since Dermot McGrane was hired as coach prior to the 2011 season. Last season, Canisius went on the road and defeated St. Bonaventure 3-0. That road win was the Griffs’ third straight in Olean, N.Y., after the program went 0-12-4 in its previous 16 trips to the Southern Tier.

St. Bonaventure is 0-4-1 this season. The team is coming off a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris Sunday. They have three goals to their credit this season. Sophomore Luke Iacobellis has played all 470:00 in goal for St. Bonaventure this year. He’s made 35 saves to go with his 2.87 goals against average and .700 save percentage.

The Griff and the Blue Devils have met three times previously, with Central Connecticut State winning all three contests. Sunday’s game will mark the first time these two programs have played since 2001, and this will be Canisius’ first trip to New Britain, Conn., since the 1986 campaign.

Central Connecticut State is 0-3-2 this season. The Blue Devils played Howard to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday. The Blue Devils have scored two goals through five games this season. Senior goalkeeper Nick Velleca has started all fives games this season for the team, and he enters this weekend’s contest with a 1.60 goals against average and a .615 save percentage.
