FREDONIA — Buffalo State applied consistent pressure but could not break through in a 0-0 tie against Houghton this afternoon which proved to be enough to win the title in the Fredonia Blue Devil/Clarion Hotel Classic.

The Bengals outshot the Highlanders 7-1 in the first half and then 9-4 in the second period.  They also held a 2-1 edge in the overtime periods for an 18-6 margin for the game, but could not break the shutout.

Buffalo State dominated in offensive zone time and produced 11 corner kicks, compared to just one by Houghton. William Banahene (Rochester/Brighton) needed to make just two saves to preserve the shutout.

Buffalo State won the tournament via a goal differential tiebreaker over Houghton who also finished 1-0-1.  The Bengals finished plus-3 by virtue of yesterday’s 4-1 win over Baldwin Wallace, while Houghton was plus-2 after defeating Fredonia yesterday by a 3-1 count.

Buffalo State will visit the University of Rochester for another non-conference game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
