AKRON, Ohio — The Canisius College volleyball team dropped its opening contest in the Akron Tournament on Friday, as the squad lost to the Zips, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-20). With the loss the Blue and Gold falls to 2-5, while Akron improves to 3-4.

The Canisius offense was out-hit by Akron, as the Zips posted a hitting-percentage of .348, while the Griffs recorded a .130 mark. Katlyn Tyler led the offense with eight kills and posted a .160 hitting percentage. Canisius continued to be bolstered by its freshmen, as Cassidy Ceriani led the team with 20 assists, and Carly Shifflet paced the team with 10 digs.

Akron dominated early in the match, as the Griffs held a lead just once in each of the first two sets, as the Zips won 25-18 in set one and 25-16 in the second set. The third was much closer for the Blue and Gold, as the Griffs worked its way to a 10-10 tie, before Akron took over. Canisius attempted to keep pace, cutting the Zips lead to 17-15, before Akron closed out the frame on an 8-5 run to win the match, 3-0.

The squad finishes out the non-conference season on Saturday, as the Blue and Gold battles Youngstown State at 10 a.m. and Eastern Kentucky at 4:30 p.m.
