Jozef Skakuj, 91 of Lockport entered into rest on September 6, 2016 under the loving care of Niagara Hospice. He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years Sofie Skakuj. Born in Huta Krzessowska, Poland on January 23, 1925. He married Sofie, whom he met during World War II, in Rossdorf, Germany on November 4th, 1952. Joe and his wife then came to the United States and settled in Lower Town, building his home with his own two hands. He achieved the American Dream, working at United Board and Carton and later retired from the Lockport Waste Water Treatment Plant in 1990. In his prime, Joe enjoyed gardening, tending to the many fires in his wood furnace, and visiting with his grandkids. He was a simple man who loved being out in his yard just mowing his lawn.

Along with his wife, he is survived by his sons, Joseph (Linda) and John (Elizabeth) Skakuj, daughter Anna (David) Nemi and predeceased by a daughter Maria (Louis) Skakuj Bluestein. His grandchildren, Christy (Andrew) Sousa, Jillian (Nick) Enderton, Robert (Danielle) Nemi, Allison (Nathaniel) Bolt and Jack Skakuj. Step grandchildren, Amanda DePalma and Nicole Arquette. Great grandchildren, David and Daniel Nemi, Sophie Enderton and Brady Sousa. Step great grandchildren, Anthony and Lauren Smith. He is also predeceased by his father Stanislaw, mother Jadwiga, two brothers and two sisters all of Huta Krzessowska, Poland.

Family and Friends may call at Prudden and Kandt Funeral Home on Thursday, Sept. 8th from 4-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at All Saints Church Friday, Sept. 9th at 9:30 am. Interment at Cold Spring Cemetery. In lieu of Flowers, memorials can be made in his name to Niagara Hospice.
