Five home meets, including four before the semester break, highlight the 2016-17 Canisius swimming and diving schedule, announced today by head swimming and diving coach Scott Vanderzell. Four of the Golden Griffins’ five home meets will be at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo, which also serves as the home of the 2017 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championship.

The season will officially get underway Friday, Oct. 14, when the Griffs travel to compete at Marist. After a weekend at the University of Rochester Invite Oct. 21-22, the Blue and Gold will host its first home meet of the 2016-17 season on Oct. 29 when the Griffs compete against Geneseo. That meet will take place at the Burt Flickinger Center, with action set to begin at noon.

The home meet with Geneseo starts a stretch of four-straight home contests for the Griffs, who will also host Colgate (Nov. 5), long-time rival St. Bonaventure (Nov. 13) and Binghamton (Nov. 19). Canisius will close out the first semester Dec. 10, when the team travels to swim at Cleveland State.

“This year, we will have a lot of competitions in the first-half of the season, and we are excited to add some new teams to our schedule,” Vanderzell said. “I like to get a lot of racing done in the first semester, and then we have a solid few months of training time leading up to the MAAC Championship in February.”

After the holiday break, the Griffs will return to action Jan. 14, when the team hosts Gannon in the Koessler Athletic Center pool. Canisius will end the meet portion of the regular-season schedule at long-time rival Niagara Jan. 21, and then the program’s divers will travel to take part in the Fredonia Diving Invite Jan. 28.

Canisius will once again co-host the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships with Niagara. That event will run from Feb. 8-11, 2017.
