FISHERS — The Fishers Fire Department has been awarded $653,728 in federal funding through a Department of Homeland Security SAFER grant.

The grant, announced Thursday by U.S. Rep. Chris Collins, is designed to help fire departments maintain a sufficient number of firefighters.

“Our first responders routinely risk their lives to protect us,” said Collins, R-27. “The least we can do is provide them with the equipment, training, and funding they need to do their jobs. This grant funding will help create more efficient and effective first responders, and I am honored to help the Fishers Fire Company secure this vital funding.”

“The $653,728 SAFER grant will allow the Fisher Fire District to increase our on-duty staff, further increasing the capability of the Fishers Fire Department,” said Andy Stromfield, Fishers Fire Department Chief. “Having extra on-duty staff working in collaboration with our current volunteers will allow our Fire District to consistently protect our area from danger. Thank you to Congressman Collins for his continued support.”

“Our brave, local firefighters do an incredible job, and it is important that we give them the training and support they need to always stay safe while helping those in need,” said Jack Marren, Victor Town Supervisor. “This is exciting news for the Town of Victor and our residents. I look forward to continuing to work with Congressman Collins to deliver results for the residents of the Town of Victor and Ontario County.”

This federal grant will allow the Fisher Fire District to expand its hiring practices and maintain a sufficient number of on-duty firefighters. This will also allow the Fisher Fire Department to efficiently answer the increasing number of calls consistent with the rapid growth in the area.

The SAFER Grant Program provides direct funding assistance to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase, or maintain, the number of trained first responders in their communities.
