“What if these men,” Jones asked, “who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?” Thus, at his invitation, delegates from men’s clubs met in Chicago to lay the groundwork for such an organization and on June 7, 1917, Lions Clubs International was born.
Melvin Jones’ personal code was “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else”
The Barker Lions presented Lion Secretary Matthew Costello with the Melvin Jones Award on June 18. An active Lion for over 40 years, Lion Matt “exemplifies the best
that Lions has to offer,” according to the group.
In presenting the award, incoming Lions President Chris Czeulsta pointed out that Lion Matt is “a man who shares his time and talents with any who need his help. From Meals on Wheels to St. Patrick’s Church to the Hartland Historical Society, many benefit from his efforts.”
