Local gas prices jumped nearly a dime over the past week as the price of gas in Buffalo was recorded at an average of $2.23 per gallon, about 9 cents more than a week ago, while in Rochester, gas is $2.22 per gallon, also a 9 cent increase.

Gas prices continue to fluctuate during the spring season. The national price for a gallon of unleaded gas went up 7 cents from last week to $2.11 per gallon. One year ago, the national average was $2.45. Today, the New York State average is $2.27, up 9 cents from last week. New York continues to be in the list of the top 10 most expensive states.

Pump prices are likely to fluctuate as the supply of summer-blend gasoline continues to make its way to terminals nationwide, according to AAA of Western and Central New York. Refineries are increasing their utilization rates, following the spring maintenance season, and as a result the U.S. EIA reported an increase in domestic gasoline inventories.

Just in time for the beginning of the summer driving season, the gasoline market is poised to be well supplied. Barring any major disruptions or shortages in supply, pump prices should stay relatively steady in the coming weeks.
