NIAGARA FALLS — Rainbow Air, the popular Niagara Falls attraction that offers helicopter rides above the brink of the Falls, opens for the season this morning.

According to Pat Proctor, Rainbow Air always opens the first weekend in April — weather depending. Despite the potential for snow, they’re doing the same this year.

Tourists have been flocking to the attraction for more than 20 years since Proctor’s family bought it in 1995.

For now, they’re running Saturday and Sunday hours — from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. — but will likely add Fridays into the mix soon due to the increasing number of tourists in the Cataract City.

The 10-minute-or-so ride takes guests from the American side of the Falls into Canadian airspace and back — all without the need for a passport.

“As soon as we take off, we’re right there – right at the gorge,” Proctor said.

The company’s two MD 500 helicopters take off with as many as four guests per flight. A minimum of two people per flight is recommended. Guests are taken on a first-come first-served basis beginning at 9 a.m. and fly until dusk during the summer — to 6 p.m. during this weekend.
