The Canisius College rowing program takes to the water once again this weekend continuing its fall season at the Hobart/William Smith Challenge on the Canal in Geneva. The race is slated for Saturday morning with the first race beginning at 11:15 a.m.

The rowing program got off to a strong start to open the 2016-17 season, with Canisius taking the top-two spots in both the varsity eight and varsity four races against Buffalo and D’Youville.

The first varsity eight, comprised of Patricia Beaulieu, Molly Murphy, Kathryn Hobika, Jessica Fabian, Brooke Stanley, Kira Voyer, Sydney Bichsel, Alexandra Heinz, and Kaitlyn Taylor posted a time of 18:08 to take top-honors. The second varsity eight finished next, as the boat of Shannon Pritzker, Bridget Lillis, Audrey Rieman, Tara Federow, Michelle Turner, Madeline Kurka, Mackenzie App, Melissa Frank and Grace Horner clocked in with a time of 18.42.

In the varsity four race, the Griffs sent out four separate boats. Canisius once again took the top-two spots with the second varsity four, consisting of Voyer, Stanley, Heinz, Bichsel and Horner, placed first with a time of  20:41. The first varsity four of Fabian, Hobika, Murphy, Beaulieu and Tyler was close behind, clocking in at 20:42 for second place.

Buffalo’s second varsity four placed third with a time of 20:51, with the Blue and Gold’s third varsity four placing fourth, as Davis, Rieman, Lillis, Pritzker and Gianna Ortolani, finished with a time of 21:22.

The Griffs fourth varsity four of Alexandria Holt, Liz DelBarba, Vicaretti, Erin Grim and Misa Gamble placed seventh with a time of 22:03.

Last season the Blue and Gold opened the year with this regatta and kicked off the season in impressive fashion. The varsity eight of Sydney Bichsel, Shannon Pritzker, Molly Murphy, Madeline Kurka, Kathryn Hobika, Brooke Stanley, Nora Kennon, Corinne Kickel, and Hannah Blum, placed first in race with a time of 16:47.64. In the second varsity eight race, the Griffs once again prevailed as Kira Voyer, Bridget Lillis, Audrey Rieman, Juliana Sciandra, Michelle Turner, Patricia Beaulieu, MacKenzie App, Liz DelBarba and Jordan Bamrick clocked in with a time of 18:00.61. Canisius also sent out three varsity fours, with the B team of Murphy, Kurka, Bichsel, Pritzker and Kaitlyn Taylor placing first (18:20). While the team of Hobika Stanley, Kennon, Kickel and Blum followed behind with a second-place showing (18:53). Prior to 2015-16 the Blue and Gold competed at the Challenge on the Canal in 2013-14 with the varsity eight coming in fourth and the varsity four placing third during that regatta. In 2012-13 the Blue and Gold’s varsity eight took second in the race, while William Smith took first.
