NIAGARA UNIVERSITY — The Niagara women’s soccer team earned its first win of the season, defeating Robert Morris 1-0 on Friday night.

In the 30th minute of the game, Ortiz’s volley inside of the box beat the keeper to the right for Niagara’s first goal of the season. Niagara created chances late in the game to try to extend its lead. In the 79th minute, Kori Thorne took a shot which was saved by the Colonials’ keeper. Eva Bachmann took the final shot of the match in the 87th minute, which went wide right.
The Purple Eagles outshot the Colonials 13-7 and had six shots on goal compared to Robert Morris’ two shots on goal. Thorne and Courtney Betts had a team-high three shots each. Thorne and Betts also led the Purple Eagles in shots on goal with two each.

Goalkeeper van Nuland earned her second career shutout; her first was a 0-0 draw against Michigan State in the season opener on Aug. 19.

“I’m happy for the girls tonight,” said NU Head Coach Peter Veltri. “It’s always good to pick up a win at home as well as our second clean sheet. It wasn’t always pretty, but the effort and resilience was there which is the more important thing. We will build off this and keep progressing forward.”

The Purple Eagles take the pitch next at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host Cleveland State.
