M&T Third Friday Exhibit Opening

October 20, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 8:00 pm

Join us on M&T Third Friday for the opening of a new exhibit: The Trial of Red Jacket

In 1868, artist John Mix Stanley completed his monumental canvas, The Trial of Red Jacket. The nine-by-five foot oil painting features seventy-four figures and is set upon the Buffalo Creek Reservation. At the center is Seneca Orator Red Jacket who is shown defending himself against charges of witchcraft. In this exhibit, guests will discover the story behind the painting, its subjects, and its artist. Co-curated by Dr. Joe Stahlman, the display will also give background to the Buffalo Creek Reservation during the early nineteenth century.

M&T Third Friday will also feature children’s activities, which will be based on the history of the Haudenosaunee people and fall themes. Kids will be presented with a brief history lesson on Haudenosaunee culture and ways they have contributed to this area, a craft with a fall theme and games that highlight interesting facts in the exhibits.

This free exhibit opening is made possible through the generosity of M&T Bank.
