Game Recap
Canisius outscored Oakland, 36-29, in the second half of Sunday nights contest. However, it wasnt enough as the Golden Griffins fell, 71-60, in Rochester, Mich.
Canisius (0-5) had eight players record a bucket in the game, highlighted by senior Sara Hinriksdottir, who recorded a game-high 19 points. SeniorAmanda Schiefen tallied 6 points and a team-high 7 boards, while freshman Erika Joseph scored a career-high 9 points on 3-of-5 shooting. As a team, the Golden Griffins shot 41.0 percent from the floor on 25-of-61 shooting.
Oakland (2-4) had four players in double-figures, led by senior Taylor Jones who recorded a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds; she also added eight assists. Redshirt-junior Nikita Telesford had a team-high 17 points, redshirt-senior LeKyesha Stennis and sophomore Chloe Grinnich had 12 and 10 points, respectively. As a team, Oakland shot 43.1 percent from the floor and 32.0 percent from 3-point land. The Golden Grizzlies out-rebounded Canisius, 40-34.
The story of the first half was the Golden Grizzlies ability to hit the 3-point shot, going 6-of-16 in the first 20 minutes of play, four of which came in the final five minutes. Redshirt-Senior LaKyesha Stennis led the attack for Oakland, hitting two deep threes on five attempts in the half. Canisius would trail going into the locker rooms, 42-24.
The Griffs tightened up defensively to start the third frame, holding Oakland scoreless in the first three minutes of play before Jones drove the lane to get the Golden Grizzlies, ending the Griffs, 6-0, scoring run to start the frame. Oakland would answer, however, extending its lead to as much as 21, after Nikita Telesford made a layup in the lane to make the score, 58-37. Canisius would then cut the deficit to, 61-43, heading into the fourth quarter, after a made jumper from junior Anna Sweny.
In the fourth, Canisius would cut the Golden Grizzlies lead to as low as nine points, 65-56, highlighted by a 13-4 run. Hinriksdottir recorded eight of the Griffs 13 points during the run, including a pair of 3-pointers. Oakland would put a stop to the Blue and Gold comeback, hitting a three and layup to put the game out of reach.

“I am certainly disappointed by the loss. However, there were a lot of bright spots in the game, and if we continue to build on what we did do well, moving forward, it will put us in a position to win.”
Game Notes
• Sunday evening’s contest marked the fourth meeting between Oakland and Canisius. The Golden Grizzlies now hold a 3-1 advantage.
• Keflavik, Iceland, native Sara Hinriksdottir had a season-high 19 points.
• Sophomore Anndea Zeigler matched her career-high 3 assists.
• Freshman guard, Erika Joseph made her first career start, scoring 9 points in 20 minutes
