BUFFALO — An African lion cub born at the Buffalo Zoo on March 5 has been named Tobias, the zoo announced today.
The zoo had announced the cubs birth — to parents Lelie and Tiberius — on April 27, but had not yet chosen a name for the cub.
At close to 20 pounds and nearly three months old, zoo staff began to call him Tobias, a name which they decided to make public.
According to the zoo, “the name has no particular significance other than a fascination of comparing Tobias’ paws and toes to those of his parents.”
Efforts continue to acquaint Tobias with the rest of the lion pride, and planning has started for his introduction to the outdoor yard as a precursor to his eventual public debut. The Zoo will continue to keep the public informed of progress at all levels.
