On Saturday, Buffalo State football welcomed Buffalo-native Matt Murray as an honorary captain during its home finale against Hartwick.

The Bengals partnered with the Muscle Movement Foundation as well as the Miles for Matty foundation, which was founded by Murray, with the goal of helping individuals conquer Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Murray was diagnosed at the age of three with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness throughout the body. Despite fighting the disease, Murray has remained passionate about sports and was a standout in the sport of sled hockey, competing 13 years and winning three national championships and received the 2015 USA Hockey Disabled Athlete of the Year Award.

Murray graduated from UB in September of 2015, and after reflecting on his journey, he began to realize how powerful the support from his family and friends was in helping him successfully fight muscular dystrophy. This support inspired him to provide the same support to others fighting his disease, who may lack adequate support in the home. The summer after his college graduation, Miles For Matty, Inc was formed.

Murray and Miles for Matty, Inc. has partnered with Mr. Rob DeMasi and the Muscle Movement Foundation, in efforts to raise awareness for duchenne muscular dystrophy.
