The Canisius College swim teams split their dual meet against Colgate on Saturday afternoon, as the men’s defeated the Raiders, 178-109, while the women’s team suffered defeat, 154-145, at the Burt Flickinger Center.

On the men’s side, the Griffs tallied 10 first-place finishes, with Thomas Kirch and Gregory Staebell leading the way for the Blue and Gold. Kirch was responsible for three-first place finishes while Staebell tallied a pair for the Blue and Gold effort.

Kirch topped the field in the 100-yard freestyle, as he placed just ahead of teammate Kyle Griffin with a time of 48.14. He also tallied a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, also besting Griffin by a hair, with a time of 21.67 seconds.

Kirsch’s day also saw a top-spot contribution in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Griffin, Cameron MacDonald, Christian Westermeier and Kirch, led the way in the event with a time of 3:49.17.

Meanwhile Staebell also made strong contributions with a pair of first-place finishes. In the 100-yard backstroke, Staebell topped the field with a time of 52.89. finishing just ahead of teammate Sean Carbary. In the 200-yard backstroke, Staebell had similar results, clocking in with a time of 1:56.98, again finishing ahead of Carbary.

In the men’s diving events, Brent Carbone took first place in the three-meter diving event with a final score of 303.05.

On the women’s side it was Cassie Brousseau, Marissa Watroba and Hannah Graesser who led the way. The trio were a big part of the women’s team placing first in nine different events.

The Trio combined for a win in the 200-yard medley realy, joining Alize Allen, as the quartet finished with a time of 1:50.54.

Meanwhile Brousseau placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, besting all entrants with a time of 1:00.21.

Watroba earned first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.56 and the 200-yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:28.53.

Aside from her win in the relay, Graesser also tallied a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in with a time of 25:02 seconds, placing just ahead of Allen.

On the diving board, Vivian Mroz topped both events she competed in, earning first place in the one-meter and three-meter events with scores of 246.60 and 221.15, respectively.

The two squads will be back in action next Sunday, when the the Griffs take on local rival, St. Bonaventure, at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo. The meet begins at 11 a.m.
