WASHINGTON, D.C. — Zemgus Girgensons and Kyle Okposo each scored for the Buffalo Sabres — and Robin Lehner made 30 saves. But Lehner needed one more save or the Sabres needed one more goal, as they lost 3-2 in overtime to the Washington Capitals.

The Sabres took an early 1-0 lead with Girgensons’ goal at 5:59 of the first period, assisted by Derek Grant and Rasmus Ristolainen.

Jay Beagle tied it for Washington 5:53 into the second period, assisted by Brooks Orpik and Daniel Winnick. Buffalo re-took the lead 9 1/2 minutes later with Okposo’s goal assisted by Ryan O’Reilly and William Carrier.

Marcus Johansson tied it again for Washington on the power play with 6:18 remaining in regulation.

Johansson then scored with 2:22 remaining in overtime to lift the Caps over Buffalo.

The Sabres are back in action on Tuesday, when they host Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
