BUFFALO – Junior David Parrottino tallied a goal and an assist to help guide Canisius to a 3-3 tie versus No. 16 St. Lawrence in collegiate hockey action Friday at KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER.

Fellow junior Ryan Schmelzer and freshman Jesse Pereira also scored for the Griffs (7-9-4). Freshman Carson Gicewicz tallied two goals and junior Nolan Gluchowski found the back of the net for the Saints (10-6-5).

St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the contest when Gluchowski’s slap shot from the top of the point found its way through traffic and past Canisius keeper Daniel Urbani to give the Saints the early advantage.

Gicewicz doubled the SLU margin at the 7:34 of the opening frame, converting a feed from junior Ryan Lough on an odd-man break to make it a 2-0 contest.

Canisius battled back to tie the game with three goals in the second period. Parrottino got the Griffs on the board less then 10 seconds when he slid the puck between the legs of St. Lawrence keeper Kyle Hayton on a breakaway to pull Canisius within one.

Gicewicz restored St. Lawrence’s two-goal cushion midway through the middle period, knocking home a loose puck during a power play opportunity to make a 3-1 contest.

Schmelzer brought the Canisius back within one less than 30 seconds later, beating Hayton with a wrist shot over the left shoulder from the top of the slot for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Pereira brought the Griffs level with 3:56 remaining in the second, putting home a backdoor feed from senior Geoff Fortman for his fourth goal of the season.

The two teams traded chances in the third, but Urbani and Hayton kept both teams off the scoreboard to send the game to overtime.

In the extra session, St. Lawrence appeared to score the game-winning goal during a goalmouth scramble, but the goal was disallowed when it was ruled that a Saints player kicked the puck into the net.

Urbani finished the game with 26 saves for Canisius. Hayton stopped 27 shots for St. Lawrence.

The teams conclude their weekend series Saturday with a 7:35 p.m. contest at KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER.
