BUFFALO — University at Buffalo women’s soccer head coach Shawn Burke announced early Monday afternoon that assistant coach Casey Derkacz has been promoted to Associate Head Coach entering the 2017 season.

Derkacz has spent the last three seasons as assistant coach under Burke as he joined the Bulls prior to their memorable 2014 campaign that ended with the programs first MAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. In his first season with the program, Derkacz saw Laura Dougall earn MAC Freshman of the Year honors while senior defender Jackie Hall was named First Team All-MAC, MAC Defensive Player of the Year and Third Team All-American under his tutelage.

“There is no one more deserving than Casey for this promotion,” stated Burke. “He’s had an incredible impact since day one helping us change the culture and developing a championship program here at Buffalo.”

Derkacz, a standout midfielder at Buffalo during his playing days, has made a huge impact on the goalkeepers as well as the defense as a unit since joining the Bulls in 2014. During the 2016 campaign, junior goalkeeper Laura Dougall was able to set the program record for shutouts in a career (27) under Derkacz’s watchful eye while the UB defense earned six clean sheets and a 0.80 goals-against average on the year.
The Western New York native has also been an integral part in the Bulls recruiting efforts since joining Burke’s staff prior to the 2014 season as Buffalo has had at least one member on the MAC All-Freshman squad each of the last three seasons.

“I’m humbled and honored by this opportunity,” said Derkacz. “Since I started working at Buffalo, I’ve had the privilege of working with some fantastic student-athletes, administrators, and athletics support staff and I want to thank them for helping us find the success we’ve had so far. I especially want to thank Shawn Burke and Kathy Twist for having faith in me, and I’m truly excited about the future of this program.”

Since joining Burke’s staff in 2014, the Bulls have accumulated a 34-18-11 overall record while having 22 Academic All-MAC members and 17 All-MAC performers.
