NIAGARA UNIV. — The Purple Eagles women’s basketball team fell to the defending MAAC Champions, Iona, 65-55 on Thursday.

The Purple Eagles and the Gaels kept things close in the first quarter and went into the second quarter tied, 9-9. Niagara and Iona traded baskets in the second quarter and two free throws from Sherburne with a little over a minute left in the quarter tied the score up once again, 20-20.  Adila Gathers gave the Purple Eagles the lead with seven seconds left, sinking two free throws to put Niagara ahead 22-21 going into halftime. Two threes from Morgan Baughman and a three from Sherburne extended Niagara’s lead, 33-26, with over five minutes remaining in the third quarter, but the Gaels bounced back and went on a 9-2 run and led 43-37 at the end of the third. The Purple Eagles edged back towards the lead in the fourth and were down only three points, 45-42, with a little under six minutes left to play. The Gaels, however, clung onto their lead and came away with the victory.

Stroemple led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 15 points. Stroemple has scored 15 or more points in eight games so far this season. Stroemple, Gathers and Kharysma Bryant led the team in rebounding with four rebounds each. Sherburne added a season-high 12 points for the Purple Eagles and also led the team in assists with three. Sherburne and Tiffany Corselli had a team-best three steals each. Gathers had six points, her career-high.

The Purple Eagles host the Manhattan Jaspers at 3 p.m. Saturday. The game will air live on LCTV.
