BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped a 35-3 decision to 17th-ranked Central Michigan at Alumni Arena on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped the Bulls three-match win streak.

Justin Patrick nearly pulled off an upset at 125 in the opening match. However, Brent Fleetwood scored three points in the third period to escape with a 5-4 decision.

The Chippewas scored dominant wins in the next three matches, before Tyler Rill got the Bulls on the board at 165. Rill, a senior, wrestling in his final match at Alumni Arena, earned a late 2-point takedown to score an 8-7 win over Logan Parks.

Muhamed McBryde wrestled well, but dropped a 7-4 decision to #20 C.J. Brucki at 174.

In a much-anticipated match at 197, #20 James Benjamin faced off against #14 Austin Severn. Severn earned a 2-point reversal in the third period to pull off the 4-3 decision.

Jake Gunning dropped a tough 2-1 overtime decision to Newton Smercheck in the 285 match to close out the dual.

“Disappointing result today,” head coach John Stutzman said. “It was a big letdown from Friday. We’ve got to learn from it.”

Buffalo dropped to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in the MAC. CMU improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the MAC.

Buffalo will next wrestle at Northern Iowa on Friday.
