DUNKIRK — A 77-year-old Dunkirk man being transported from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Erie, Pa. to a Chautauqua County nursing home died en route when the ambulance carrying him crashed.

According to New York State Police, the crash occurred around 5:40 p.m. when the EmergyCare ambulance, traveling eastbound on State Route 5 left the roadway, entered a ditch and struck a culvert.

Arthur R. McArthur sustained life-threatening injuries in the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 49-year-old operator was taken to a nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries.


This collision is still under investigation.  NYSP Collision Reconstruction Unit responded.
