The Canisius baseball team kicked off its four-game tournament in Georgia with an 8-4 win over Fort Wayne on Friday night, as Liam Wilson and John Novenche both accounted for a pair of RBI in the neutral site victory. With the win the Blue and Gold improved to 3-2 on the year, while The Mastadons dropped to 2-4.

The Canisius offense didn’t waste time in the matchup, starting the game with three straight singles from the top of the order, as Canisius finished the frame, with a 3-0 lead.

Fort Wayne clawed back into the game, scattering three hits throughout the middle innings before a big five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, sealed the deal for Canisius.

Jake Lumley was once again a catalyst on offense, leading the team with three hits in five at bats and was responsible for a pair of runs in the win. Wilson also rapped out a pair of hits and a run, while Brandon Nicholson finished with a pair of hits in five at bats as well as one RBI.

Zachary Sloan once again got the start for Canisius and worked 6.2 innings, allowed six hits and three runs and fanned a career-best eight batters during the contest. Will Frank came on in relief and worked 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit and one earned run and fanned four as he recorded his first win of his Griffs career.

Jordan Martin made the start for the Mastodons and worked five innings and yielded eight hits and three earned runs. Dalton O’Boyle , Shane Odzark and Dru Sebastian all split an inning each and yielded three hits and five runs, with O’Boyle feeling the brunt of it, getting charged with four runs and the loss.

Brandon Yoho was the offensive leader for Fort Wayne as he tallied three RBI on the day, while Jake Weber rapped out three hits.

Canisius continues its weekend with a pair of games on Saturday. The Griffs face Chicago State at 3 p.m. and NJIT at 6 p.m. The series wraps up with another matchup against Fort Wayne on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
