EDINBURG, Texas – The University at Buffalo baseball team was handed a 8-1 loss on Friday night in the series opening game at UTRGV. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 4-10 on the year while the Vaqueros improve to 13-7 on the season.
UTRGV got out to the quick lead on Friday as they netted three runs in the first inning off of starter Alec Tuohy. The Vaqueros notched two earned runs while also adding an unearned run as the Bulls committed an error.
The home side added a run in the bottom half of the second inning to make the score 4-0 as Austin Siener collected a RBI single through the right side of the Buffalo defense.
The Bulls were finally able to get on the board in the top of the third inning as Alex Thrower earned an infield single and then stole second base before Ben Haefner reached base for the 14th straight game as he notched a walk. Vinny Mallaro then dug in and collected a RBI single to right field to score Thrower from second, making the score 4-1 in favor of the home team.
The Vaqueros didn’t let UB get any closer as they were able to add two runs in the bottom of the third inning as well as they eighth inning to make the score 8-1. UB wasn’t able to overcome the deficit as they were handed their seventh straight defeat.
Thrower finished off his night going 2-for-4 with a run scored while Mallaro collected the lone RBI as he went 1-for-4 at the dish. Phillip Tomasulo went 2-for-3 while Andrew Taft collected a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss. Kyle Brennan collected a hit as he added to his team-leading 12-game hitting streak while Haefner has reached base safely in all 14 games this season.
Tuohy finished off his night going 6.0 innings while allowing eight hits, four earned runs and striking out five batters in the loss. Freshman Greg Dunham pitched one scoreless inning while UTRGV starter Carter Johnson finished off his night going 6.2 innings and allowed eight hits, one earned run and struck out seven batters.
The Bulls and UTRGV will return to the diamond on Saturday night as first pitch is slated for 7:00 pm. Charlie Sobieraski will pitch for the Bulls on Saturday.
