ANAHEIM, Calif. — Zemgus Girgensons was the hero for the Buffalo Sabres Friday night — or Thursday morning depending on what coast you were on — as he scored on the Anaheim Ducks’ Jonathan Bernier in the 10th round of a shootout.

Girgensons goal secured two points for the Sabres in their west coast trip which saw them drop the first two games to San Jose Sharks and L.A. Kings by scores of 4-1 and 2-0 respectively.

It was a goaltender’s kind of night as there were only two goals in regulation despite a combined 71 shots by the two teams — 31 for Buffalo and 40 for the Ducks.

Rickard Rakell scored at 11:48 of the first period, assisted by Cam Fowler and Brandon Montour. Ryan O’Reilly tied it for the Sabres at 15:35 of the second period. Jake McCabe and Eichel tallied the assists.

Following five scoreless minutes of overtime, the shootout was set up between Anders Nilsson and Bernier with Nilsson stopping eight of the 10 shots against him in the shootout.

Next up for Buffalo, the team travels to Detroit to play the Red Wings at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
