FORT MYERS, Fla. — Sophomore Lauren Castro had a solor homer and scored a run in the sixth, and junior Madi Weathers picked up a complete-game shutout win, as the Golden Griffins defeated Cleveland State 3-0 in the first game of the Battle at the Beach, hosted by FGCU.

In the second game of the day, Iowa State scored four times in the fourth to wipe out a 2-0 Canisius lead en route to a 4-3 victory over the Blue and Gold. Canisius is now 10-12 on the season.

In the first game, Canisius struck first, with Castro hitting a solo shot to left to give Canisius a 1-0 lead. The Griffs added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, scoring twice to make the score 3-0. Castro scored for Canisius in that frame, and freshman Sydney Kreimann also added an RBI-base hit in the frame.

The three runs were more than enought for Weathers, who improved to 5-4 in the circle with the win. She allowed just three single, two of which were infield hits, and only two Cleveland State base runners reached second base during the contest. Weathers also fanned seven Vikings batters, as Cleveland State fell to 2-22 on the year.

In the second game, Castro ripped a two-run homer to left in the top of the first to give Canisius a 2-0 lead, but Iowa State (13-16) scored four times in the fourth to end up with the 4-3 victory.

Canisius had four hits in the loss, with Castro going 2-for-2 with a homer, two RBI and a run scored. Freshman Morgan Altman also scored a run in the loss for the Blue and Gold.

Canisius will end its Spring Break trip to Florida on Saturday when the team plays a pair of games. Action will start at 10 a.m., when the Griffs play Drexel.
