WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Niagara Purple Eagles defeated the Monmouth Hawks, 4-3, on Sunday for their first MAAC win of the season.
The Purple Eagles won the doubles point for the first time this season. The No. 1 team of Sharlee Deshmukh and Shannon Wong defeated Monmouth’s Alexandra Graff and Victoria Nugent, 6-2. In No. 2 doubles, Ali Hutchinson and Sansriti Ranjan won their match, 6-3. The match came down to the final singles match. Shannon Wong and Sharlee Deshmukh each won their matches in straight sets, but Niagara lost a three-set match in No. 1 singles and lost in No. 4 and 6 singles. In No. 5 singles, Hutchinson defeated Chioma Gabriel in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 to clinch the win.
Niagara hosts Marist in its final home match of the season on Friday at 8 p.m. at Village Glen Tennis Center.
