BUFFALO — Allie Block (N. Tonawanda/Starpoint) was in the circle for two more wins and added a game-one grand slam to pace Buffalo State to a sweep over visiting Geneseo, 7-3 and 6-5, today in a SUNYAC doubleheader.
Game #1: Buffalo State – 7, Geneseo – 3
Block was 3 for 4 with a grand slam, two doubles and five RBIs and also earned the win with a complete-game six-hitter with seven strikeouts. Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) was 3 for 4 with a run scored in her first game back from injury since Florida. Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) finished 2 for 2 with a double, a triple, a run scored and two walks. The Bengals led off the game with a pair of bunt singles and a walk to load the bases, before Block’s blast over the left field wall provided all the offense the Bengals would need with the early 4-0 advantage. The Knights responded with two runs in the third, but answered with one run in the bottom of the inning and two more in a three-hit fourth inning. The Knights completed the scoring with a solo homer in the sixth, but never threatened again.
Game #2: Buffalo State – 6, Geneseo – 5
Buffalo State finished with four hits and committed three errors, while Geneseo produced 10 hits and had no errors, but it was Buffalo State coming away with the 6-5 win. Block was in the circle again for the win, finishing with four strikeouts in her 11th win of the year. Buffalo State took advantage of four-consecutive walks in the first inning and then a three-run double by Emma Ruggiero (Amherst/Sacred Heart) that sailed over the head of the drawn in center fielder to take a 6-1 first-inning lead. The Bengals would only produce one more hit after the first inning. Geneseo hit a solo homer in the third inning and then added a two-out, three-run home run in the seventh to cut the deficit to one, but Block struck out the next batter to end the game.
Buffalo State will close out its home schedule tomorrow with a SUNYAC doubleheader against Brockport starting at noon.
