BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team (12-4-2, 8-3-1 MAC) fell to Western Michigan 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon in the regular season finale at UB Stadium.
With today’s results, the Bulls will be the three seed in the 2025 Mid-American Conference Tournament and will face sixth seeded Bowling Green on Saturday, November 1 in the first quarterfinal match of the day at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
After the Broncos scored in the first 30 seconds of the game to take an early lead, the Bulls looked to rally as Jasmine Guerber slid a ball through to Carolyn Hinkle and she drilled a shot back across the box, but Reagan Sulaver made a diving save. Later, off a corner kick, Maya Galko settled a ball and curled a ball on target, but it sailed just high and out of play.
Western Michigan added to their lead in the 17th minute as Abby Smothers took a corner kick and curled a shot into the net to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead and that would be the score at the half.
The visitors looked to add to their lead in the 57th minute as Avery Peters drilled a shot from just inside the top of the box, but Lexie Thompson made a fantastic leaping save to punch the ball out of play.
Buffalo managed just two shots in the second half, both coming in the final 15 minutes, as Ashley Reyes took a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Sulaver and then later, Guerber got her foot on a ball but her shot attempt sailed high and out of play.
The Broncos outshot the Bulls 8-6 on the night, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal and a 5-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made two saves on the day.
The Bulls end the regular season with a 12-4-2 overall record and a 8-3-1 league mark, including a 6-1-1 record at UB Stadium.
The winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal match will face two-seed Miami (OH) on Tuesday, November 4 in the first semifinal match of the day at 1pm.
