Hello Metalheads! This is John back, this time with a video premiere. Eschaton released an absolutely stellar album earlier this year and are premiering their new lyric video with us today. Castle Strnad is the closing track on their new album and is the video we bring to you. Here is a statement from the band regarding this song and its meaning:
“Castle Strnad is a tribute track to one of the greatest vocalists in death metal history, Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder. Trevor had a signature combination of monstrous lows and highs that has left a clear stamp on the metal genre. He was a lyrical genius, but most admirably, Trevor was a devoted student and champion of metal music, this crazy artform that so many love. His presence in the metal community still looms large.
In several interviews, Trevor expressed his passion for retro video games, his all-time favorite being Castlevania, which as TBDM fans will know, inspired the lyrics for the song What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse. Eschaton shares his appreciation of old school video games and their soundtracks, especially Castlevania. We did a metal medley of Dwelling of Doom and Monster’s Dance from Castlevania II on our last album, Death Obsession, on a track entitled Seal of the Curse. We had so much fun doing it that we thought to take it to the next level, this time with vocals, and our plan was to ask Trevor to do guest vocals. We chose the track Clockwork from Castlevania III for its incredibly evil and badass melodies and went to work. Right around the time we were wrapping up the preproduction, Trevor sadly took his own life. This was devastating to us, as it was to many. Picking up the pieces, we decided to dedicate the song to Trevor.
We reached out to other vocalists to do the guest vocal spot. After a few vocalists flaked, and others were struggling to write the lyrics, I (Josh) wrote the lyrics to try to minimize the time and effort required for the guest spot. When things continued to fall through with guest vocalists, Mac stepped up and crushed it so that we could finish the album. This is the reason that it is the only song that I wrote the lyrics for, as Mac wrote the lyrics for the rest of the album.
The lyrics cover much of the lore of the Castlevania series, with every line having some reference to the games and storyline. We thought that gamers, metal heads, and Trevor fans would all enjoy this lyric video, a celebration of Trevor, Castlevania, and brutal death metal. We hope Castle Strnad brings some joy to those that miss him.”
As a long time member Blast Fiends (fans of The Black Dahlia Murder) I ALWAYS looked up to Trevor for his attitude and charisma on stage and his support for underground bands. Enjoy this amazing track, it’s new video and the entire ripping album.
