JoAnn M. Kurek, 66, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025 at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY, surrounded by her loving family.  Born in Niagara Falls, she was the daughter of the late Melvin H. and Jeanette (Morowski) Austin.

JoAnn was a 1978 graduate of Niagara Falls High School and went on to attend Niagara University. On August 12, 1982, she married the love of her life, Ronald D. Kurek, Sr., and together they shared 43 wonderful years of marriage.

JoAnn was a hardworking and dedicated woman. She worked for Dr. Charles Mallo for 20 years as a receptionist, and most recently was employed in Environmental Services at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, NY, for 3 years. Beyond her work, JoAnn enjoyed crafting, reading, and spending time outdoors. She especially loved visiting lakes, camping, and spending time at cottages, with a special fondness for the Finger Lakes region.

Known for her humor and quick wit, JoAnn brought laughter and joy to those around her. She was a devoted and amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Always present at her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and social events, she made sure they had everything they needed. Her family was her greatest pride and joy, and she will be remembered for her love, selflessness, and unwavering support.

In addition to her husband, Ronald, JoAnn is survived by her beloved children, Ronald D. Kurek, Jr., Danielle (Joshua) Coppede, Jennifer (Jason) Held, and Kristen (Terrell Smith) Kurek-Smith; her cherished grandchildren, Jackson Held, Jessa Held, Jameson Held, Calvin Smith, and Grayson Smith; and her siblings, James (Dottie) Austin and Paul Austin. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. JoAnn was predeceased by her sisters, Sharon (late Charles) Guarino and Suzanne Austin.

JoAnn’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 16 at 12 Noon at Prince of Peace Church, 1055 N. Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14304. Private interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lewiston, NY, will take place at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to Niagara Hospice at www.niagarahospice.org.
