
The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.19, up three cents from last Monday. One year ago, the price was $3.33. The New York State average is $3.18, up three cents from last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.47. AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:
- Batavia – $3.21 (up 1 cent from last Monday)
- Buffalo – $3.18 (up 1 cent from last Monday)
- Rochester – $3.19 (up 3 cents from last Monday)
A recent refinery issue caused a small jump in gas prices ahead of Labor Day weekend, but prices have stabilized over the last couple of days. Flooding at the BP Whiting Refinery in Indiana forced the largest refinery in the Midwest to shut down operations for several days following a severe thunderstorm. The refinery has since come back online.
Overall, gas prices remain consistently lower than a year ago. This morning’s national average is 14 cents lower than it was this time last year. Oil prices, which have a direct impact on gas prices, remain low as well – trading in the $65 to $68 range per barrel.
This morning, diesel prices are down one cent to $3.69 compared to last week. The New York average is $3.89, down one cent from last week.
When it comes to EV charging, the national and state averages for L2 commercial electricity remain steady. Today’s national average per kilowatt hour of electricity at a public EV charging station stands at 36 cents. New York’s rate is 35 cents. The state has approximately 12, 829 chargers. An estimated 1.2 million AAA members live in households with one or more electric vehicles.
To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
