Hello Metalheads! This is John back with another album review. This time I bring for your reading(and listening) pleasure an EP from a band that hails from Norway. Hypermass released Apparition Day on March 7th, 2025 and it’s great.
This one is just a solid fun listen the entire way through. I know that the majority of places and the band themselves call their genre as progressive death metal. But I’d say the EP is a really good blend of progressive metalcore and death metal! The riffs make me immediately think of Lamb of God or Killswitch Engage, but their are signs of death metal as well. The other aspect that makes me think of metalcore are the vocals. They’re almost a hardcore mid vocal at every turn with occasional highs and lows throw in for accent.
My favorite track on the EP is Supernova Collective by far. It features a a super shreddy solo that also has beautiful sections as well. Solos don’t have to be all shred with no expression. The main riff of the song is my favorite thing about this track. It has this super fun, bouncy feeling that sets up the grooves of the entire EP. The feel of this whole song and EP is just so tight and “in the pocket” that makes it so pleasing to the ear. It’s also very straightforward with not much in the way of meter changes, which in this case is great. The breakdown of the song has a little build up, but shines in the little break in sound that it gives itself at the end of the riff that is played everytime. The riff is a slight variation on the main riff of the song which is a nice touch with some melodic aspects.
This EP is such a fun and great listen every single time. This is so solid and I would give this an easy 9 out of 10 in my rankings. This EP is my favorite groove focused album I’ve heard in a long time. Hypermass have definitely made a fan out of me, I even went back and listened to their first album and that was great too.
