An infographic posted on the Amherst Police Department social media pages today shows that stolen vehicles in the town are on a trajectory to increase last year’s number by a significant margin.
With 170 vehicles stolen through the end of May, Amherst is on a path to 408 stolen vehicles for the year, a 33 percent hike over 2023’s number of 306. That, in itself was a 36 percent hike over 2022.
Social media users were quick to point of their own personal beliefs on the reason for the increase — from bail reform to “raise the age,” to vehicles not being locked. Amherst PD offered no response to the theories as of this posting.
