Slam legends are back with a new 3 song EP “Pious Impiety”. It’s been 7 years since their last release “Obscene Majesty” a full length. The Texas brutal death masters keep putting out great releases to no avail. This release marks the return of vocalist Ruben Rosas and new guitarist Marvin Ruiz (Stabbing). Brad’s drumming is extremely organic, as the photo shows. Coming from an old school guy I don’t doubt this for a moment. It’s great to see any band let alone an older band (30 years of existence!) not go too modern. I personally love this, that’s just me. Let’s dive into the music.

Ruben’s gurgly voice still sounds as young as ever and carries “Pious Impiety”. The change in art style is great too. I love the sick covers, offensive designs and everything that goes into brutal death metal and slam. To have a cool painting like that invoking a creepy emotion is cool as well. The music isn’t changing, it’s some of the heaviest music you’ll ever get out of a band (sans Black Sabbath). Ruiz’s riffing is akin to the band, very groovy yet occasionally technical. Brad’s drumming rules as usual, with a complimentary brutal snare tone.

The rhythms are great with some cool bass lines, changing speeds and tempos efficiently. “Pious Impiety” is easily the heaviest release of 2026 by the slam gods. No nonsense old school slamming brutal death metal. The band that brought this disgusting genre to the metal scene. Oddly enough, the production was cleaner yet still had that classic Devourment sludge and grime via the music. Part of their allure and style is a rough recording further enhancing their brutality in my opinion. Everyone is audible and nothing dominates the mixes on the songs.

“Pious Impiety” is so filthy you’ll keep it on repeat for a while like I did. So many bands in the genre have imitated this style but Devourment made it popular (in death metal terms). For me it had a ton of replay value not being a full length. But I honestly enjoy any release ep or full length. For slam or brutal death metal a 3 song release is amazing. Even a 7 song album. And anybody new to them this would be the perfect introduction, a short offering from the gods.

All. Hail. Devourment.
