
Canisius used a trio of second-half goals to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Niagara, 4-1, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s soccer action Wednesday at Niagara Field in Lewiston, N.Y.
Sophomore Azaria Fagan, senior Skylar Cornell and junior Maggie Cregan accounted for the three second-half tallies for the Golden Griffins (7-8-1, 7-4-1 MAAC), who clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship with the victory.
Senior Lizzy Harkness notched the opening goal for Canisius while freshman keeper Chloe Tseros finished with two saves to post her seventh victory of the season.
Morgan Kulniszewski accounted for the lone goal for the Purple Eagles (6-7-2, 3-6-2 MAAC), giving Niagara the lead in the 11th minute when she knocked home a loose ball after Tseros was unable to corral the initial shot off the boot of Caitlyn Gratton.
Harkness knotted the score in the 20th minute, putting home the ball during a scramble that began with a free kick from junior Jessica Whitaker.
Fagan gave the Griffs the lead in the 51st minute when she deposited Cornell’s centering feed into the Niagara goal for her team leading fourth goal of the campaign.
Cornell expanded the Canisius cushion to two in the 57th minute as she converted the penalty kick opportunity after sophomore Mya Jones was fouled inside the box.
Cregan closed out the scoring in the 69th minute, tucking a shot into the upper left-hand corner of the net from the right side for her second goal of the season to give the Griffs a 4-1 lead.
