ETHEL RENE OAKS CALHOUN was born on July 21, 1945, in Bluefield, West Virginia, to the late McKinley and Mamie Oaks, Sr. At an early age, Ethel was baptized at her family’s home church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, in West Virginia. During her ninth-grade year, she moved to Buffalo, New York, to live with her sister, Dorothy O. Howton. While in Buffalo, she attended and graduated from East High School.

In 1963, Ethel married James C. Calhoun. From this union, two daughters were born: Donna Renee Calhoun Baugh and the late Schuwanna Lynn Calhoun.

Ethel joined Macedonia Baptist Church in the 1960s alongside her sister, where she later welcomed her parents into fellowship. She was a faithful member of the Gospel Chorus under the direction of Milton Russell, joyfully sharing her voice in praise.

Professionally, Ethel was a dedicated and compassionate Ward Secretary at Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital, where she served with distinction for many years until her retirement. Her commitment to service extended far beyond her career. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and friends.

Ethel was preceded in death by her beloved parents, McKinley and Mamie Oaks, Sr., and her cherished daughter, Schuwanna Lynn Calhoun.

Her legacy of love continues through her devoted daughter, Donna Renee Calhoun Baugh (Atlanta, GA); grandsons, Bruce Baugh, Jr. (Atlanta, GA) and DaVaughn Pryce; brother, Marvin Oaks; great-granddaughters, Khyla and Khylie Baugh (mother, Tijuana Ponder – Atlanta, GA); godson, Antonio Carroll; and granddaughter-in-love, Unique Franklin. She also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

Among Ethel’s greatest joys were attending her high school class reunions in West Virginia and celebrating her love of Gospel music at various singing events. She was admired for her elegance, grace, and her signature blonde patch of hair that perfectly captured her radiant spirit.

Ethel’s life was a beautiful reflection of faith, love, and devotion, a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
