
The Canisius swimming and diving teams opened up the 2025-26 campaign on Saturday with a dual meet at MAAC rival Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The host Red Foxes swept the event, with the women’s team posting a 154-124 win, while the Marist won the men’s event, 192-102.
Canisius sophomore Daphne Mead earned three victories for the Golden Griffins on Saturday. She finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.41 before claiming the victory in the 200-yard backstroke with her time of 2:08.21. The Baltimore, Md., native cruised to a win in the 200-yard IM race as well, with her time of 2:08.57, finishing nearly five seconds in front of the next closest swimmer.
Junior Evie Leighton touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle race with a time of 1:56.73, and the Griffs’ 400-yard freestyle relay team, made up of Leighton, seniors Emily Blake and Hannah Brainard and junior Leyna Swanson scored a win with their time of 3:44.13.
In the men’s competition, senior Toby Mayfield won two events, placing first in both the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard butterfly. Junior Elliot Somers won the 100-yard backstroke with his time of 51.79 and sophomore teammate Giovanni Poggio won the men’s 200-yard IM with a time of 1:57.82.
In the diving competition, freshman Leo Rodriguez won both the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, while fellow freshman Lacee Williams placed third in both the women’s 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
UP NEXT
Canisius will return to the pool on Oct. 18 when both teams square off against the University of Rochester and Siena in Rochester, N.Y. Action is set to start at noon.
