James R. Ellis Jr., affectionately known as “Jim,” “Uncle Jimmy,” or “Papa Jim”, passed from this life on October 8, 2025, after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and a dear friend to many.
Jim graduated summa cum laude from the University at Buffalo, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. A lifelong learner, he also completed coursework at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Tennessee, continually seeking to expand his knowledge and understanding of the world.
He began his career at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before joining the New York Power Authority, where he dedicated more than 35 years of service. Through hard work, intelligence, and leadership, he rose through the ranks. He retired in 2010 as a Senior Operations Engineer. His colleagues remember him not only for his expertise but for his mentorship and his gift for teaching — Jim was an educator at heart, always eager to share his insight, whether the topic was philosophy, physics, astronomy, or history.
Jim had a boundless curiosity and a remarkable ability to make learning engaging and fun. He touched the lives of all who knew him — through his sense of humor, his eclectic taste in music and movies, and his thoughtful conversations that could shift from lighthearted banter to deep reflection in an instant.
Outside of his professional life, Jim found peace and joy on the water. Whether boating, tending to his dock, or guiding others along the upper Niagara River, he was always teaching — how to tie a proper boat knot, how to navigate by the stars, or simply how to appreciate the beauty of the journey.
Jim was a force of nature — vibrant, humble, and endlessly giving. He was the life of every gathering and the grounding spirit of his family and friends. The wisdom, laughter, and love he shared will continue to ripple through the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, kindness, and unforgettable memories — a legacy that will live on through the lessons he taught and the love he gave so freely.
Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia Ellis of Niagara Falls, NY; his children Jennifer Ellis and Michael Ellis; step-daughters Jillian (Erik) Onesi, Dana (Kent) Hurlbert, and Valerie Onesi; grandchildren Matthew, Joshua, Jayden, Lani, Naomi, Avalyn, and Caleb. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his dog Miller.
There will be NO Prior visitation. A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held October 15th from 4-7 PM at Foley’s Tavern, 8752 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, PO Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240; or Niagara Hospice Inc., 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY, 14094. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to both organizations for their compassionate care during Jim’s lengthy illness, and final days. Arrangements entrusted to ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME INC.
