The Canisius Athletic Department enjoyed another solid semester in the classroom as 19 of its 20 varsity programs posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.10 or better during the 2023 fall semester, the University announced Tuesday.

Eleven teams posted a team GPA of 3.40 or higher, while the school’s 407 student-athletes combined to post a department grade point average of 3.44 for the term.

The recently-completed semester also saw 48 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Those 61 student-athletes highlighted a group of 337 Canisius student-athletes to record a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. That breaks down to 83.0 percent of the College’s student-athlete population.

The women’s cross country and women’s track team led all Golden Griffins programs in the fall semester as each posted a 3.70 cumulative grade point average. Men’s cross country and track was second with a 3.58 cumulative GPA, while softball and women’s lacrosse both registered a 3.57 cumulative GPA. Women’s soccer (3.54), women’s basketball (3.53), volleyball (3.53), women’s swimming and diving (3.47), hockey (3.42), men’s swimming and diving (3.41) and men’s lacrosse all finished the fall term with a team cumulative GPA of 3.40 or higher.

In November, the NCAA released its annual Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data for incoming student-athletes from 2013-17. Canisius’ 98 percent GSR eclipsed the school record that was established in the 2020 report and equaled by the 2021 and 2022 reports. The release also represented the sixth consecutive year that the University’s athletic department has either matched or improved upon its graduation success rate from the previous report.

The data also showed that all 16 of the Canisius’ varsity programs posted a GSR score of 90 or higher while a total of 12 Canisius programs recorded perfect 100 percent graduation rates: men’s cross country/track, golf, hockey, men’s swimming and diving, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s cross country/track, rowing, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving and volleyball.
