Canisius senior guard Siem Uijtendaal has been named the Hercules Tires/MAAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday.
A native of Haarlem, Netherlands, Uijtendaal is the second Canisius player to receive the award this season, joining with teammate Frank Mitchell, who was honored by the conference office on Nov. 27. This marks the first time since the 2013-14 season where two different Golden Griffins have been selected as the MAAC Player of the Week in the same season.
Uijtendaal averaged 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game last week as the Griffs went 1-1 in non-conference games against Robert Morris and Pittsburgh. In the home victory over Robert Morris Dec. 6, Uijtendaal scored a season-high 24 points after he went 9-for-17 from the field, 3-for-8 from 3-point land and a perfect 3-for-3 at the free-throw line in 38:57 of game action. He followed that effort with a team-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the Griffs’ road loss to Pitt on Dec. 9. In that game, where he made one 3-pointer and knocked down five free-throws, Uijtendaal also grabbed six boards and dished out a career-high five assists in 38:31 of game action. For the week, Uijtendaal shot 60.0 percent (15-for-25) from the field, 40.0 percent (4-for-10) from behind the 3-point arc and he was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
On the season, Uijtendaal leads the Griffs and ranks fourth in the MAAC with his 15.6 points per game scoring average. His 40.9 percent (27-for-66) success rate from 3-point range ranks eighth-best in the conference, and his 2.5 3-point field goals per game is third-best in the MAAC.
Canisius (6-5, 1-1 MAAC) is off until Dec. 22, when the Griffs travel to High Point to close out non-league play. That game will tip-off at 7 p.m., and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. The Canisius radio call is available for free via the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network at GoGriffs.com.
