John E. Grannis Sr., 86, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully at his residence on December 7, 2023. Born in Philipsburg, PA, he was the son of the late August and Anna (Zezoney) Grannis Sr.
John attended local schools in Pennsylvania, where he graduated from High School. When he was 18 years old, he relocated to Niagara Falls, NY. He proudly served in the United States Marines in 1955 until his honorable discharge. In 1957, he married the love of his life, Shirley Y. (Bowser) Grannis at St. Mary of the Cataract Church. John was employed as a Millwright with Allied Chemical in Grand Island, NY for 17 years, worked in Maintenance with the New York State Parks Department, and also worked as a Pulper Operator for Cascades/Norampac in Niagara Falls, NY for 14 years until his retirement in 1999. He was also a skilled painter and worked with various local painting companies.
John was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He also loved to bowl. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, and will be remembered for being a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, John is survived by his children, John E. Grannis Jr., Cynthia A. (Joe) Defilippis, and Susan M. (Steven) Rice; 12 grandchildren, Nicole Grannis, Tiffani Grannis, April (Brandon) Alderson, Michael Grannis, Stefanie Defilippis, Connie (JJ) Borman, Frankie (Casey) Defilippis, Joseph (Chantal) Defilippis, Rebecca Rice, Brianna (Jessie) Boliver, Melissa (fiancée Marie) Rice, and Stephen Michael; 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; his sister, Doris (late Richard) Brenneman, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was sadly predeceased by his granddaughter, Erica Renee Grannis Rice, and his siblings, August (late Sara) Grannis Jr., Edwin (Lois) Grannis, and Mary Louise (Jim) Gates.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 12 from 10 – 12 PM at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY 14304, where funeral services will be held at 12 PM. Interment in Niagara Falls Memorial Park Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
