Edith Penale, formerly known as Edith Merino, passed away on November 10, 2023, at the age of 73 in Ft Myers, FL. She was born on June 28, 1950, in Niagara Falls, NY. Edie was a native of Niagara Falls, NY, and spent her life dedicated to education and her family.

Edie had a passion for teaching and made a significant impact on the lives of many as an elementary school teacher. She began her career at the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School and later retired from the Niagara Falls School District. Edie’s commitment to education was evident in her accomplishments. She graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1968 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Nazareth College in 1972. She also completed graduate studies in education at Niagara University.

In addition to her professional achievements, Edie had a vibrant personality and a wide range of interests. She enjoyed running, bicycling, pilates and traveling throughout the United States by car. Edie also had a creative side and found joy in calligraphy and crocheting.

Edie’s faith was important to her, and she found solace and community in her places of worship. She was a member of Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Niagara Falls, NY, St. Bernard R.C. Church in Youngstown, NY, and St. Columbkille R.C. Church in Ft. Myers, FL, where she volunteered her time.

Edie leaves behind her beloved spouse of 47 years, Ralph, as well as her brother, Hon. Robert P. (Gail) Merino of Niagara Falls, NY, and her sisters, Mary Ann (Donald) Ruff of Duncanville, TX, and Janet (James) Tallerico of Palm Coast, FL. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Edie was preceded in death by her parents, R. Robert and Helen (Leone) Merino, as well as her sisters, Letitia (Henry) Nichols and Rita (John) Hager.

The family will be holding private services at their convenience to honor and remember Edie. Her legacy as a dedicated educator, loving spouse, cherished family member, and lifelong friend will forever be remembered and treasured.
