JANET LORRAINE (ALSTON) DOCKERY was born on March 14,1949 in Buffalo, New York, to the union of Barbara Alston and Carl Alston Sr.

In 1969, at the age of 20, Janet married Eddie James Swaggard in Buffalo, New York. Their union produced two children: Edie Swaggard-Green (Vincent Green) born in 1967 and Eddie Jamel Swaggard born in 1971.

Throughout Janet’s life she made an impact everywhere she went. She worked as an Elementary School Teacher, an Insurance Agent and an EMT among other jobs. She received her teaching certificate from SUNY Buffalo State College & a B.A. in Sociology from SUNY University at Buffalo. Janet had a love for arts & crafts, cooking for her family and reading her Bible. Her favorite song was Smile by Kirk Franklin & her favorite color was Purple.

Janet Alston departed this life on Friday September 8, 2023 in Douglasville, Georgia. She was preceded in death by both of her parents: Barbara & Carl Alston Sr.; her brother, Carl Alston Jr.; and her husband, Eddie Swaggard.

Janet leaves to cherish her memory: her sisters, Brenda Mack, Deborah Alston, and Clarissa Alston-McCutcheon all of Buffalo, New York; her daughters: Edie Swaggard-Green and Barbara Woods (niece); and her sons: Eddie Swaggard and Brian Mitchell; her son-in-law, Vincent Green; her grandchildren: Andre Yourse, Danielle Green, Jayonna Knox, K’nasia Mitchell, Dana Mitchell, Aria Marie Swaggard; as well as a host of step-children, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Janet’s battle with lung cancer started in October of 2017. She was determined to prepare her family for the journey. She leaves a legacy of strength and courage that will, no doubt, impact everyone who knew her. She will be loved, missed and remembered greatly for the beautiful woman she was.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 21, 2023, 10 AM at Pine Lawn Cemetery, 2951 Harlem Rd, Cheektowaga, New York 14225, where a Graveside Service will be held.
