Joanne Metzler, 86, of the Town of Niagara, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 21, 2023 at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital.  Born in Niagara Falls, NY she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Alice (Martin) Laraba.

Joanne was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Niagara Falls.  In 1958, she married Thomas E. Metzler, Sr. at Mt. Carmel Church.  She was employed in Production at General Motors/American Axle for over 15 years until her retirement in 1992.  She was a member of the Sanbornites Senior Citizens and the Rosary and Altar Society at St. Leo’s Church.  Joanne enjoyed golfing and bowling in leagues, practicing tai chi, dancing, gardening and crafting.  She cherished her friendships with her lifelong St. Mary’s friends, bowling friends, and her hockey family.  Above all, Joanne’s life centered around her grandchildren, and she loved attending their sporting events, dance recitals and school functions.  Joanne will be remembered most for her pleasant nature and ability to always find a kind word to share.

Joanne is survived by two children, Mary Alice (William) Kowalski and Thomas (Ann) Metzler, Jr; and was predeceased by her son, Jeffrey Metzler. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Stephanie (Kyle) Nethaway, Laura Kowalski (fiancé Matt Signor), Robert Metzler, Ryan Metzler and Grace Metzler; her great-granddaughter, Evelyn Nethaway; her brother, Richard (late Elsie) Laraba, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to her husband of 64 years and her son, she was predeceased by her siblings, Robert Laraba, Betty Pippard, and Carol Gardner.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 25 from 3 – 7 PM at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin on Wednesday at 9:30 AM, followed by Joanne’s Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. Peter’s Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY.
