Is driving an electric vehicle different than driving a gas vehicle? Find out for yourself!
AAA Western and Central New York is now offering one-on-one electric vehicle (EV) driving lessons in a AAA-owned Chevy Bolt EV. The 45-minute EV lesson will enable the driver to take control and experience an EV under many different situations – expressways, lane changes, intersections, backing, and more. The driver, guided by a professional instructor, will learn how an EV handles, sounds, and reacts while driving in everyday traffic situations.
“There are differences between electric and gas vehicles that drivers should be aware of in terms of sound, acceleration, and handling,” said AAA Manager of Driver Training Mike Formanowicz. “Let our experts help you make a smooth transition if you have recently purchased or will be purchasing an EV.”
AAA driving instructors are New York State DMV-certified and receive 33% more training than is mandated to assure the quality and effectiveness of instruction.
EV interest is on the rise. AAA’s latest consumer survey reveals that one-quarter of Americans say they would be likely to buy an electric vehicle (powered exclusively by electricity, i.e., not a hybrid) for their next auto purchase, with Millennials leading the way (30%). Of those who want to buy electric, the common factor is a strong desire to save on fuel costs, with 77% citing this as a top reason for interest.
EVs continue to grow in popularity with new EV registrations up more than 250% over the last five years. The shift to electric gives AAA Driving Instructors the opportunity to be at the forefront of education in the growing EV sector. According to the registration data from Experian (via Automotive News), out of 1.24 million new light vehicles registered in January, some 87,708, or 7.1 percent were all-electric.
EV lessons will only be offered in the Buffalo area for now and are available to drivers of all ages. At home pickup and drop off are sometimes included depending on the student driver’s residential location. The price for an EV lesson is $75 for AAA members, $85 for non-members.
