PERIQUE T. BACKEY, twin daughter of Peter Backey and Judith D. Cherry, was born on March 29, 1982 in Buffalo, New York.

She was educated in the Buffalo Public School system, attending Martin Luther King Jr. Multicultural Institute No. 39, Indian Park Academy No. 70, Community School No. 53, and Lafayette High School.

Perique was very much like her mother, Judith, who she shared her love of the Arts. At a young age, Perique attended Miss Barbara’s School of Dance, where she trained in ballet and tap dance, and Matthew Clark Academy, where she trained in tap, jazz, and modern dance. In grammar school, Perique learned how to play the clarinet. Performing at talent shows and recitals, her light shined bright as she danced and played her favorite song, We Shall Overcome.

She loved listening to poetry, watching dance performances, and attending plays. Her greatest joy came from being around family. It made no difference to her if you were related or not; when she met you, she loved you, she cooked you dinner- you’re family!

On Wednesday, March 22, 2023, our loving daughter, mother, sister, and friend, Perique T. Backey, entered into eternal rest.

Perique leaves to cherish her loving memories her children: twins, Tah’miah D. Brown and Jou’Vone J. Brown, Ron’Niya T. Coates, Dae’Vion M. Backey, and Kay’Denn R.
