WASHINGTON — The Sabres scored three goals in the first period and were up by a goal with just 69 seconds remaining in regulation but the Washington Capitals tied it and then rallied to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 in a shootout at Capital One Arena on Wednesday.

Sabres goals came from Ilya Lyubushkin, JJ Peterka, Tyson Jost and Zemgus Girgensons.

The Sabres now stand at 33-28-6 for 72 points, six points out of the final Wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Sabres next play the Philadelphia Flyers at 7 p.m. Friday.
