NIAGARA UNIVERSITY — Niagara baseball alumnus Wynton Bernard ’12 will be the keynote speaker at the seventh annual Niagara Baseball First Pitch Dinner on February 4th, 2022, at the Niagara Riverside Resort at 5:30 PM. The dinner will be a celebration of the past, present and future of Niagara baseball, bringing together alumni, friends, fans and current member of the program. The event will be sponsored by the Sgroi Family in memoriam of Jeff Sgroi who graduated from Niagara in 1992.
Head Coach Rob McCoy is excited to be hosting the first pitch dinner once again. “We are so thrilled to host our 7th annual Niagara Baseball First Pitch Dinner. It is the time every year the coaches, administration, families, alumni, and friends get to honor and celebrate our players for their hard work and dedication to being the best people, students, and athletes they can be. Having Wynton join us this year is even more special. Most have heard his story of finally getting the call to the Big Leagues this summer, and our team will benefit from his wisdom and candor. We cannot wait!”
Bernard made national headlines this season after being called up to the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 12, 2022. He made his MLB debut on Aug. 12 after spending 10 successful seasons in minor league baseball. The Poway, CA native was drafted in the 35th round in 2012 after a four-year career with the Purple Eagles. In his first MLB season he played in 12 games and hit .286 with three RBI and three stolen bases.
The reception starts at 5:30 p.m., with the dinner and program following at 6:30 p.m. Additional speakers include Niagara’s Associate Vice President for Athletics, Simon Gray and head coach, Rob McCoy.
